Every few weeks a new restaurant pops up to mark its spot on Pune's map in an attempt to satiate the city's appetite for fast food. This week, bringing something new to Pune's platter is Pastamania on Dhole Patil road. Claiming to be the world's largest chain of pastas and pizzas, it was started in Singapore in 1998. This is the third outlet to open in India, the first was in Gurgaon and the second in Ahemdabad; its selling point- great pasta and pizza in casual settings at affordable prices.

The restaurant was officially inaugurated on February 29 followed by a private lunch comprising a special preview of its menu. The appetisers at Pastamania serve as a worthy introduction to your Italian fast food experience. The hors d'oeuvre list comprises tangy minestrone soup and the soup of the day, an ideal accompaniment with which is the delicious, lightly toasted and flavoured garlic bread. For the health conscious are the several salads being offered, including Chicken Caesar salad and Potato salad. The star attraction, the main course, includes a wide array of pastas and pizzas. The pizzas come in two sizes, 7" which is enough to feed one and 10" which can be shared by two. The BBQ chicken pizza priced atRs 257 for 10 inches is perfectly suited for the Indian palate with a delicious combination of onions, chicken and barbeque sauce. The Meat Lover pizza manages the perfect balance between delectable and yet not spicy. For the vegetarians out there, the Veggie Supreme at Rs 247 pizza is an assault on the senses with a combination of corn, olives, mushrooms & capsicum. For those who want to spice up their day, the ideal way to do it is with the Hot Pepper pizza. The spicy jalapeno peppers along with mushrooms, tomatoes and onions may find you reaching for an Italian soda.

For the curious eater willing to provide his taste buds a new experience is the wide array of pastas. Arguably the first restaurant to provide so many varieties, the pastas are based either in tomato or white sauce or tossed in olive oil. The Chicken Ham Aglio at Rs 113 is a flavoured combination of chicken ham, chilli, garlic and diced tomatoes tossed in olive oil. Chicken Bolognese is spaghetti served with a mild tomato sauce and minced chicken. Another favourite is the Rosy Veg, a savoury combination of peas corn and mushroom in a tomato herb sauce.

The best part of the entire experience is eating the warm fresh results straight from the oven. The light fresh chocolate mousse with its subtle sweetness is a popular choice. A Pastamania speciality, the banana pizza desert with its scrumptious combination of banana, chocolate and crisp bread is a must try and a fitting finale to an Italian meal.

The restaurant, with its casual pizza parlour ambience, has most of its ingredients on display, including tinned tomatoes, olive oil and boxes of pasta. Though the fresh ingredients are sourced from Mumbai and Pune, its tomatoes, olive oil and pastas are all imported. As corporate chef Dharmesh Katira puts it, "I'm only as good as my ingredients." Its unique service system involves a customer going up to the counter and selecting their meal. At the counter, the different types of pastas - spaghetti, fusilli, linguine and penne on display allow customers to pick and choose whatever they desire. They then have to pick up a number and sit and wait seven minutes for a seven-inch pizza and ten minutes for a ten-inch pizza.
