Pune, February 8 The Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) to be held in October in the city might just help usher in a direct Pune-Delhi train with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh promising to take up the issue with Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav.

This was among the five-point agenda presented before the Prime Minister at Raj Bhavan by Pune District City Congress members who were given an hour long hearing by the Prime Minister at Raj Bhavan on Friday.

Pune District City Congress chief Abhay Chhajed said he had submitted a letter to which the PM gave the group of members a patient hearing and said that he would talk to his Railway Minister for starting a special Commonwealth Express to mark the event.

Amidst tight security, the Prime Minister arrived in the city in a chopper at the University of Pune helipad along with two other choppers at 5.30 pm. He was received by Pune Divisional Commissioner Nitin Kareer along with Minister of Women and Child development Harshvardhan Patil, MP Suresh Kalmadi, MLAs Balasaheb Shivarkar and Chandrakant Chhajed, among others. University of Pune Vice-Chancellor Dr Narendra Jadhav and Pune district collector Prabhakar Deshmukh also met the PM.

Chhajed told this paper that in his presentation he had demanded special funds for a metro train, a visionary plan for the development of the Pune railway station and relaxation of rules under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for purchasing buses to be operated on the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) routes. With hutments mushrooming on Central Government lands, he specified that SRA like schemes should be executed for these dwellers. He also discussed the implementation of the Sachar Committee Report. Among those present in the pandal for the 50-60 people included Prithviraj Chauhan, Prabha Rau and Margaret Alva.
