In his letter, the prime minister gave details of how the Central government was pumping money in the infrastructure sector to generate income among the people.
Bhattacharjee was also informed that the Central government was ready to increase the borrowing limit of the state governments from banks.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary KM Chandrashekhar has convened a meeting of chief secretaries of all states on January 31 in Delhi to discuss implementation of Central schemes in the state and how to make them more flexible. There will be more meetings in this regard, according to a state government official.
Bhattacharjee, on several occasions, expressed his serious concern about the recessionary trend in the world and how to take on the effect of the crisis. “It’ a global phenomenon and we could not avoid it. But we don’ know how it will hit us. That is why I am very concerned about it,” he had said earlier.
In another development, Shyam Saran, the prime minister’s special envoy on climate change, is coming here next week to meet the chief minister, who has voiced his concern on climate change and even set up a committee headed by noted environmentalist Rajendra Pachauri to see what measures West Bengal could take to check environmental degradation in the state.
