Kolkata Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is scheduled to attend the January 21 programme in Kolkata when St Xavier’s College and the St Xavier’s Collegiate School will celebrate 150 years of their existence.

“The programme will mark the year-long celebration of the institution. Throughout the year we will have a series of programmes that will be organised by the school, college and their alumni,” said George Ponodath, rector of St Xavier’s College.

The institution was set up in 1860 by a Catholic Christian minority religious body, the Society of Jesus, and was affiliated to Calcutta University in 1862. St Xavier’s College, which was granted autonomy under the University of Calcutta in July, 2006, has more than 5,000 students at present. The St Xavier’s Collegiate School has 2,200 students with affiliation to both ISC and the West Bengal Board.
