Pune, March 3 It's not just about sex and issues related to HIV. An initiative has been launched for the first time by the City Family Welfare Bureau of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to tap adolescents in around 650 slums with a population of 9-10 lakh in the city and understand their problems. It could be emotional and behavioural, says Dr Anjali Sabne, head of the Welfare Bureau who has had experts from outside Pune training more than 500 anganwadi workers in how to deal with the slum youth.

While one workshop has had enthusiastic anganwadi workers asking for more details about what comprises mood disorders to mood swings, the next workshop to be held from March 17-19 will provide a kit with seven booklets on how adolescents should lead a healthy lifestyle. "We have specifically selected anganwadi workers who are well versed with the demands of slum dwellers,"says Sabne.

An anganwadi - a child care centre - is located within the village or in a slum area. Each anganwadi is run by an anganwadi worker and a helper from amongst the locality and caters to a population of 1,000.

The corporation has appointed 900 such anganwadi workers and as part of the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) programme the workers try to achieve goals like health check ups, immunisation, supplementary nutrition, treatment of minor illness and also pre-school education to children. While pregnant women and nursing mothers are examined at regular intervals, the health officers decided to utilise the services of the anganwadi workers and tap the adolescent youth who so far have not been regularly followed up.
