Two persons have already lost their lives within the corporation area because of the collapse of dilapidated buildings.
“PMC has been issuing notices to dilapidated buildings either for repairs or demolition by owners, but unfortunately not many follow the directions of civic administration,” Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi told The Indian Express.
He said the PMC will act immediately on structures which have been already served notices while the assessment of other old structures will also be carried out.
There are around 200 structures that are in very bad condition and notices have already been served to them, Pardeshi said. The PMC plans to take action before the monsoon to avoid any untoward incidents. The PMC’s panel of structural engineers appointed for carrying out the survey has been focusing on old structures in Kasba Peth and Budhwar Peth, he said. An immediate survey of buildings more than 50 years old in Rasta Peth and Somwar Peth will also be undertaken. The PMC also acts on the complaints filed by citizens, though the final decision is taken based on the report of the structural engineers.
