Deputy commissioner of PMC, Dnyandeo Thube, gave this information to reporters on Monday. “In all, there are 7,422 authorised hawkers and over 20,000 unauthorised hawkers doing business within the municipal limits.
“The PMC had prepared a list of unauthorised and authorised hawkers on the 30 main roads of the city, which are to become no-hawkers zones and there are 971 licenced and 3720 illegal hawkers operating on these 30 roads, as the survey revealed,” he said.
The PMC had appealed to the hawkers to submit their preferences regarding where they want to get relocated. “In the first phase of filing these applications, 1,650 hawkers had given their preferences. These people will be given I-cards soon. The second phase of filing these applications will be starting from March 9,” said Thube.
The PMC has issued tenders for initiating the construction of buildings where these hawkers are to be rehabilitated under the first phase.
The locations include Kharadi, Warje, Kothrud and Baner. Each authorised hawker will be leased a 6x7 ft shop at these places as per the scheme.
Thube said that there would be a ‘hawkers’ convention’ held soon, where they will be given all the information about the scheme. A booklet about the policy would also be distributed to the hawkers.
