Dr Anand Malik, dean, SGH who met the Pune Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi, pointed out that it was the responsibility of the corporation to provide the anti-rabies vaccines (ARVs) as 80 per cent of the patients with dog bites hailed from the corporation areas.
Rabies is caused by the bite of animals, mostly dogs afflicted with rabies. ARVs should be administered to people who have been bitten by a dog suspected to be rabid. With more than 50 patients availing of treatment for dog bites at Sassoon hospital on a daily basis, the authorities have asked for a minimum of 6000 ARV injections per annum.
Dr P S Dhaigude, medical officer, PMC admitted that it was the civic body’s responsibility to provide the vaccines. We have given instructions to our officers to provide Sassoon hospital with the ARV also known as rabipur injections. These cell culture vaccines are expensive and cost Rs 300 per dose. A patient bitten by a dog needs to take at least a minimum of five doses, say Sassoon health officials.
