The PMO directed the state government to investigate the NGO as it had received complaints that the samity had indulged in activities that are against the interests of the country.
Home Secretary Samar Ghosh himself confirmed it saying that both Kolkata Police and the state police have been asked to investigate into the matter.
“The allegations against the organisation were quite serious. They were using letterheads with the Ashok Stambha emblem and using them indiscriminately. They were posing themselves as the implementing authority of the Prime Minister’s 20-point pragramme for poverty alleviation. All these are serious charges and need to be probed thoroughly. The PMO wanted us to finish the investigation quickly and report to them,” said Ghosh.
According to a Home Department official, people from the NGO used to visit as well as write to various government and non-government offices and introducing themselves as Central government officials demanding to know about the progress of various schemes.
“After receiving complaints from various quarters the PMO contacted us to find out who they are and what monetary gains were involved. In fact making unauthorised use of the Ashok Stambha is a criminal offence,” the official said.
