Pune The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has proposed to set up a GPS-based passenger information systems at city bus stops. This is part of the proposal sent to the World Bank to secure a Rs 450 crore loan.

When this gets implemented, it will mean each bus stop will be able to tell passengers when the next bus is due.

The PMPML control room will also have clear ideas of where the buses are at any point of time and estimate the requirement of additional buses on crowded roads.

The catch is that this will take a long time in getting implemented.

“We have sent the proposal. It will be implemented as soon as the loan proposal comes through,” said Nitin Khade, PMPML chairman and managing director.

Khade was attending the first year anniversary of the PMP Pravasi Manch.

Khade said that the company will improve bus services and modernise the depots as well. Meanwhile the PMP Pravasi Manch, has said that in the next month it will focus on lobbying for the publication of timetable booklets for PMPML commuters.

“It has been so many years since the bus utility was set up, but commuters have no clue regarding bus timings. Most passengers rely on their own experience while waiting for buses. Our top priority is to get the PMPML to publish time table booklets,” said Vivek Velankar, convener of the Manch. The other priorities of the group include route rationalisation and improved quality of bus service.

The PMP Pravasi Sangh was set up on March 2 last year and represents over 10 lakh PMPML commuters, Velankar said.
