The police have also recovered some stolen vehicles and seized weapons from the possession of those arrested, even as two more members of the gang managed to give a slip to the police.
Those arrested on Tuesday night have been identified as Avtar Singh alias Tari, the kingpin of the gang, Gagan Kumar, Raj Kumar alias Raju and Vicky Bania while Rajan and Sawan Kumar managed to flee.
As per their modus operandi, the members of the gang would target persons looking for a lift. Once inside the car, they would rob the victim at gunpoint.
Addressing a press conference, DSP (Rural) Paramjit Singh Pannu said that following a tip-off, a police party led by Basti Jodhewal SHO Gurbans Singh Bains arrested the four from Puneet Nagar last evening.
The gang members were hatching a conspiracy to commit a dacoity when they were arrested, Pannu said.
The police also seized a stolen Tata Sumo, a Maruti and a motorcycle from their possession besides a sword and a knife, the DSP added.
During preliminary interrogation, the four confessed to their involvement in as many as 55 criminal cases, including murder and attempt to murder, kidnapping, theft, cheating, across the state, Pannu said.
Pannu said that with further interrogation, the police are likely to make a breakthrough in a number of criminal cases.
