Moradabad (UP), February 6 The Moradabad Police on Wednesday intensified the hunt for the main perpetrators of the multi-million dollar kidney racket — Dr Amit Kumar, his brother Dr Jeevan Kumar and another Delhi-based doctor, Dr Saraj Kumar. Look out circulars (LOCs) have been issued for all three, which will be put up at all airports, railway stations and bus terminals across the country apart from important public places and police stations.

The Interpol has recently issued an alert against the two Kumar brothers, who along with Dr Saraj Kumar, are missing since January 24, the day Amit Kumar’s clinic in Gurgaon was raided.

Meanwhile, the Moradabad CJM court on Wednesday heard the remand application of accused Dr K K Aggarwal, an anaesthetist who helped Dr Kumar during operations, and Jagdish, the driver of another accused and key accomplice, Dr Upender. The counsel for Jagdish, Virender Sharma argued that the only complainant in the case, kidney donor Vidya Prakash Jatav, had gone to the police two and a half years after his kidney was removed. Sharma argued, “There has been no medical examination of Jatav. The case is very weak.” Jatav, who then worked as a labourer in Gurgaon, recently let the cat out of the bag following a tiff with the middleman about his dues.

Sharma also argued that the Moradabad Police was overstepping its jurisdiction and criticised the police for “adding forgery and criminal charges against his client”. The police, who already have Dr Upender in custody, wanted the custody of Jagdish because the duo's statements were not tallying after interrogation. This was not the case at the time of their arrests, an officer said.

Finally, the court remanded Dr K K Aggarwal to police custody for 48 hours and Jagdish for 30 hours. Officers warned both will be grilled thoroughly to glean more about Kumar’s country-wide nexus. Jagdish had reportedly helped Dr Kumar for 10 years in this illegal trade.

K K Aggarwal and Jagdish, while in the jail vehicle at the Moradabad court, spoke to Newsline. Aggarwal said he was a private anaesthetist and assisted with operations. “I am not attached with any hospital or person. I also don’t have a clinic of my own. If I had worked with Dr Amit Kumar, then I would have also been on the run after the raid. Why would I sit at home?"

Jagdish said, “I am just a driver. I went where Dr Upender asked me to go. In fact, on January 17, I went to the Focus Centre to pick up some samples for examination. I also had only Rs 5,000 on me when the police picked me up. But they said Rs 1.5 lakh had been found on me.”
