Pune All the roads leading to the police commissioner’s office were barricaded by the police on Monday. Gun-toting policemen had asked people to use other roads to head to their destination. Those who wanted to visit the commissioner’s office or other offices nearby were asked to park their vehicles at a distance and go walking to the offices.

Security was up at all vital installations in the city including railway station and markets.

Asked about the beefed up security in the city, Additional Commissioner of Police Rajendar Singh said, “January 26 is nearing and we are conducting security drills so that it will give us an idea of how soon can we respond in case of emergency and how soon can we shift our forces from one place to another. These mock security drills might continue even after January 26. We are undertaking these drills to counter threats from armed gangsters.”

“Basically, what we are checking is the preparedness of the police force to counter any threat. We may relax the tightened security after and when we finish our drills,” he said.

Singh said that after the 26/11 attacks, the whole security spectrum had changed. That is also the reason why the city police is upgrading its capabilities and is buying advanced equipment like 125 bullet proof helmets, 10 deep search metal detectors, 10 bullet proof jackets, 1 bomb box, five baggage x ray scanners, two hook and line sets, 10 360 degree protection bullet proof jackets, 70 bullet proof jackets (level 3 A), 2 non linear junction detectors and 25 Shaminayas.

The police has announced that if any crime like terrorist operations, outfits, thefts, dacoity, house break-in and vehicle thefts are detected on the basis of the information provided by an individual, that person would be rewarded by the police.

Ravindra Sengaonkar, DCP, Special branch has appealed to the citizens to call these officers in case of any vital information

As a resident of Pune, I want to point out that the Police need to check their response time with normal movement of traffic and not by stopping all vehicular traffic.
