“Elaborate arrangements have been made for the day. Police teams have been constituted to keep a vigil on miscreants and ensure the day passes off peacefully,” said Superintendent of Police (Security) H S Doon while speaking to media persons on Thursday.
There will be early morning deployment of police personnel at the university, colleges, schools and other educational institutes to avert any untoward incident. Some officers will be deployed in civil dress to man places like Sukhna Lake and the Sector 17 gardens. Checkposts will beput up on the famous ‘geri route’.
“We will not tolerate hooliganism. If anybody is found involved in eve teasing or any vulgar act, they will be dealt with sternly. We will allow traffic to flow without hindrance on the ‘geri route’,” said Doon.
Senior Superintendent of Police S S Srivastava said: “No moral policing will be done on Valentine’s Day. But people involved in indecent acts will not be spared either. Women police officers will be deployed outside educational institutes to ensure the safety of girl students.”
PU Gate No 1 and 3 closed on Feb 14
Entry to the Panjab University campus will be regulated through Gate No 2 (opposite Sector 15) on Valentine’s Day (February 14) while Gate No 1 and 3 will remain closed from 8 am to 3 pm. Students and teaching/non-teaching staff will have to carry their identity cards for verification to avoid any inconvenience, said Professor Naval Kishore, Dean Student Welfare, PU.
PU Rose fest from today
The Panjab University is all geared up for its three-day rose festival, beginning from Friday. A first-of-its-kind festival to be organised in the university, it is the brainchild of the Horticulture department of the university. Addressing mediapersons in the university, Organising Secretary Dharampal Sharma, said, “The main objective behind the event is to sensitise students about the environment that we inhabit. Apart from taking up the issue of environment, the Rose festival will also focus on maintaining a beautiful and green campus.” He added that the festival will also motivate students and staff of the university to contribute to the environment in their own way. Sharma also elaborated on the various competitions that will be held to mark the occasion including dance, painting and flower arrangements. While a food court and amusement rides have been set up in the campus for the festival, a fashion show will also form part of the event.
