The tools the police will use to put its message across will include childhood attractions like snakes and ladders and comic books, besides PowerPoint presentations and interactions with those who need to protect themselves against cyber crime.
Organised by the Mumbai Police in association with NASSCOM, it is being described as the largest such initiative.
“The week is aimed at sharing the best practices of cyber safety with citizens across categories and for this purpose, we in association with NASSCOM will organise workshops for students and entrepreneurs on topics like cyber crime and cyber terrorism, hidden dangers of social networking sites and internet piracy. We will also take our awareness campaign to residential localities to inform parents on how to keep their children from being victims of or perpetrating cyber crime,” said Mumbai Police Commissioner D Sivanandhan.
The case of Lt Col Jagmohan Balbir Singh, who was arrested last week on charges of uploading and downloading child pornography, is likely to find mention in the awareness workshops.
“While informing parents about how to keep their children away from pornographic sites, officials will also discuss pornography and its kinds which include child pornography. A special mention will be made about the laws and penalties,” said JCP (Crime) Himanshu Roy.
Officials will also hold meetings with representatives of malls, BPOs, banks and other financial institutions, cyber-café owners and travel agents who predominantly conduct their businesses online.
“We have also roped in ethical hackers to speak on the methods of hacking,” said Sivanandhan.
“Snakes and ladders format on cyber safety and comic books will be introduced and there are around 30,000 awareness leaflets that are waiting to be distributed,” he added.
