A haldi-kumkum ceremony, an integral part of Sankranti celebrations, was performed during the function. The wives of police officers and women constables gave away tiffin boxes and food packets to the sex workers besides motivating them to lead their life in a better manner.

“We met them and spoke to them on how they should leave their present profession and told them that no matter what the police would help them do that,” said Kirti Bodke a woman constable from DB Marg police station. “When I spoke to them I told them how important it is that they study. I also spoke to them on how fulfilling a life of honest hard work is,” said Mandakin Ghadge whose husband works with the Local Arms division number 2 at Worli.

In 2008, the Additional Commissioner of Police, South region, Dr K Venkatesham initiated a campaign encouraging greater interaction between the police and sex workers.

As part this, sex workers were assisted by the police in opening bank accounts. They were also assured that any move on their part to leave their profession would be ably aided by the police.
