Vadodara, February 16 Even as the police sent teams to trace the third accused in the Sonal Mohania rape case, which was reported on Friday, the top brass of the city police held a meeting at Makarpura Police Station to discuss the complainant's merit. The police said the complainant has been changing her statements since Friday, while the main accused, Pintu Chauhan, claimed they were in a relationship for close to two years. Meanwhile, the case was transferred to Assistant Commissioner of Police D B Damor on Saturday and an offence of rape has been registered under the Atrocities Act.

Makarpura police inspector R D Lashkari, who was the investigating officer, said, "Though the offence has been registered, we are trying to ascertain the truth in the claims made by the complainant. The police will also question the victim's family soon about the incident," he said. Such was the dilemma about the complaint that a three-hour meeting was held with senior officers, to question the two arrested and the complainant. Sources in the police said that Mohania had changed her statements three times in the last two days, while there was evidence that the main accused and the victim were involved in a relationship. Requesting anonymity, a police officer said, "We do have some evidence that they were close to each other for about two years as they lived close to each other in GODC Makarpura. These aspects are still under investigation." He added the police were trying to explain to the girl the seriousness of the charges as well. According to the police, a money-related issue is also reportedly involved in the case. "The accused claimed that Mohania's family asked for Rs 2 lakh, saying otherwise they would file a complaint, while the victim's family claims that he offered to pay them the amount not to file the complaint," Lashkari said. According to Mohania's complaint, Chauhan and two others had abducted her from GIDC Makarpura on February 10 and took her to a hut in a village in Padra taluka. Chauhan then allegedly sexually abused her repeatedly throughout the night, before dropping her back to her house the next morning in a car.
