Mumbai A week after an unidentified woman allegedly stole a four-day-old baby boy from Sion Hospital, the police are yet to find any substantial clues to nab the accused. With the police investigations hitting a dead end, they have now turned to the public for help as their last resort.

The police have put up sketches of the accused across railway stations, hospitals, few medical stores and are also contemplating getting them printed in newspapers.

“We have put up sketches of the woman at railway stations between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Thane and from Churchgate to Dahisar. The sketches will also be circulated in hospitals in case the woman comes for getting the baby treated,” said Shantanu Pawar, police inspector (Crime), Sion police station.

The police say that it is the lack of witnesses that has put a spoke in the investigation. “The only witnesses to have noticed the accused were the mother of the stolen baby and another lady in the ward. When the woman fled with the baby, the mother was inside the bathroom and hence there is no witness to where the accused went after leaving the ward,” said Pawar. He added that if the hospital security personnel or the staff were alert, the incident could have been averted.

“If the accused had a track record in our books, we could have easily nabbed her. But in this case, it’s a woman who absconded with the baby and we don’t have any leads,” he added.

A four-day-old baby boy was stolen from the maternity ward of Sion Hospital while his mother, Mohini Nerurkar, was away washing clothes.
