While Dr Mathur refused to comment on this issue, sources said he was a strong candidate for the upcoming Syndicate elections. Soon after getting the permission from the Health department, he had applied to return his Senateship at the university on February 11. However, the varsity authorities did not confirm the information, which is why he lost the chance to stand in the Syndicate elections, which is scheduled on February 21.

Commenting on this issue, Vice-Chancellor Prof Ramesh Goyal said, “Dr Mathur has applied to get back his membership in the Senate. But it involves certain technicalities. We will look into the matter and take steps accordingly.”

Baroda Medical College officials said, “Adeesh Jain is contesting from the teachers’ category for the upcoming Syndicate election. Dr Mathur also wanted to contest for the same post this year. However, he has failed due to the university’s delay.”

Recently, the state government made a faux pas in terminating the membership of Senate member Mehul Lakhani following his alleged links with Ashwin Patel, who is the general secretary of the Ahmedabad unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. However, he was reinstated as a member a few days after being removed.
