Surat Leaders from different political outfits assembled outside the Surat police commissioner’s office on Tuesday and handed over a memorandum demanding strict action against those who had insulted their religious feelings.

Earlier on Sunday, sandals were found placed near the pictures of Chattrapati Shivaji and Dr B R Ambedkar outside the house of Republican Party of India leader Shanker Sonavne in the Nawagam Dindoli area.

The Marathi community also gave a bandh call in Navsari, on Tuesday. Sunday’s incident has shocked the Dalits and the Marathi people in the city.

The incident had triggered violent protests in the district on Monday when angry mobs torched buses and auto-rickshaws.

On Tuesday afternoon, leaders of the Congress, BJP, Shiv Sena, Republican Party of India, Dalit Mukti Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party, gathered outside the Surat police commissioner’s office, while representatives of the Marathi community handed over a memorandum demanding strict action.

People from the Marathi community came out onto the streets in Navsari on Tuesday afternoon and took out rallies. They forcibly shut down shops and offices on the main roads and near the railway station. The Dalit Samaj leader in Navsari also handed over a memorandum to the Mamlatdar demanding strict action against those responsible for Sunday’s incident.

Sonavne said: “We condemn the incident. Somebody wanted to disrupt the communal harmony in the city. We have told our people not to damage public property or take law into their hands. We have demanded that if the police fail to crack the case within three days, we will take out a rally and stage dharnas at different places.”
