Ludhiana Baldev Singh Mangat, Block Primary Education Officer, Ludhiana-1 Educational Block, comes from a family of educationists. Eight members of his family have served in the State Education department. Starting his career as a primary schoolteacher in Phambra Government Primary School at Jalandhar in 1976, Mangat became officiating BPEO of Ludhiana-1 in 2003. He talks to Newsline .

How do you view teaching as a profession in the present scenario?
Teaching is a noble profession but mushrooming private schools and increasing political interference has taken its toll on the profession. There is interference at every step. The bureaucracy has to learn to say no.

Government schools have lost their sheen. In your opinion, who is responsible?
Teachers, society and the state government are together responsible for the mess. The government has to put a check on the incessant growth of private schools. A majority of students prefer to study in private schools, owing to better facilities and the lax attitude of government schoolteachers.

Do you think that political leaders are really worried about primary school education in the state?
A majority of political leaders are opening schools affiliated to the CBSE but no one is giving any attention to open schools affiliated to PSEB.

What kind of problems are faced by you as an administrator?
Not much. I believe in setting an example by being punctual. I have to sit in the office and monitor 230 government primary schools falling under my block.

What about job satisfaction?
I joined this profession with an aim to serve the society. This is the reason why I did not ever take tuitions. Had that been my aim, I could have opened my own school. It is satisfying to see my students serving at different posts.
