“I thank Mallya for saving the priceless legacy of Bapu and bringing it back to India. Paying a huge sum of 1.8 million dollars at an auction in the US, Mallya did every Indian proud,” said Patel. The memorabilia includes a pair of glasses, a pocket watch piece, sandals, a plate and a bowl.
Patel added: “Having come to know that the items will be placed in public for all to see, I request on behalf of all Gandhians and the people of Porbandar that they be displayed at the museum at Kirti Mandir.”
He said Mallya was the true son of the motherland and a true Indian, and he believed the business tycoon will consider the feelings of the people and bring the items to Kirti Mandir soon.
Located in heart of the coastal city of Porbandar in Saurashtra, Kirti Mandir is a unique place, connecting the birth places of Gandhi and his wife Kasturba.
The foundation stone of the modern structure was laid in 1947, and it was inaugurated in 1950. The height of the temple is 79 feet, symbolising the 79 years of the lifespan of Gandhi. The monument is a symbol of religious integration of six major religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism and Islam.
