Aftab, a student of Class VI, was standing on the first floor balcony when the portion of the building suddenly came crashing down, police said. Aftab was rushed to Islamia Hospital and was discharged after treatment.
According to a senior civic official, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had issued a notice to the school in December 2008 declaring it an unsafe building.
“A notice under Section 411 of the KMC Act, 1980, had already been served in December declaring the building dilapidated, but to no avail. The school authorities did not take any step to repair the cracks in the building,” said the official.
The official said that a demolition order will be issued immediately under 411 (4) of the KMC Building Rules.
There are around 4,500 buildings in the city which have been declared endangered or unsafe for use by the KMC, but no exemplary action has been taken yet. The building of Footnani Chambers at 6, S N Banerjee Road, adjacent to the KMC, is also an insecure building. But this building is owned by the KMC and rented out as commercial units.
“For taking any step against Footnani Chambers, we have to file a case against the KMC. So we are yet to file a demolition case,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
