Power thefts help MSEDCL gain Rs 6 crore

Pune The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has earned a whopping Rs 6.53 crore as part of the anti-power theft drive conducted in the Pune zone from April 2008 to January 2009.

According to officials at MSEDCL, Pune division, at least 8,820 cases were detected for power theft which also includes unauthorised use of electricity connections and tampering of meters.

The amount of Rs 6.53 crore was recovered from 3,311 cases and a first information report (FIR) was lodged in 96 cases. "Anti power theft squads have been set up at each of the 14 divisions in Pune and officials at 53 sub divisions are also involved in the drive," says S P Nagtilak, Chief Engineer, Pune division of the MSEDCL.

Meanwhile, highly placed officials said that a meeting will soon be held to discuss relief measures that will be required during the summer. So far Pune requires an additional 173 MW of power to avoid load-shedding .1
