Thirty-three-year-old Ranjan Dutta is a source of inspiration for those whose lives have not been one easy joyride. Dutta, a resident of Sarsuna, Behala, suffers from moderate retardation and impairment of speech and hearing, but has emerged as a local sports icon owing to his sheer determination. An enthusiastic football player and a carrom lover, Dutta has remained involved in sport, thanks to his courage and urge to be a part of the mainstream. Sunil Kumar Dutta, Ranjan’s uncle, who stays under the same roof with his nephew, recalls how full of life Ranjan used to be as a child, especially while playing with the neighbourhood kids.

Apart from sports, Ranjan has also excelled in the field of drama and art. While he had been an indispensible part of several school plays, his mastery over colours and expressions earned him accolades from the government of India when he won an art competition organised by the department of food and nutrition.

In order to face the competitive society and be a pillar to his family, Ranjan has acquired several professional skills from the speech and hearing institute at Golpark. Through sign language Ranjan indicates, “I still love making chairs which I learnt at the institute. I do not like being idle.” At times, Ranjan also mans a shop owned by his family and assists his two sisters.

His mother smiles and says, “My son loves dressing properly and is always clean and tidy. He never hesitates to dream big. He hopes he can afford a better house some day. He has undoubtedly been an extremely loving child and has made us all proud with his efforts.” The economic difficulties faced by the family after Ranjan’s father passed away, have not deterred him from dreaming of a better life. He now assists his sisters in running the family.

Besides helping out his family, Ranjan has also made his country proud by his show of courage. He has represented India in the Summer Games 2007 - Special Olympics - at Shanghai, China. He won a gold medal for volleyball.

Ranjan’s sister Gita Devi says, “I never thought my brother could reach such heights. I did not realise how talented he was before he won in the Summer World Games. I still vividly remember the day I went to receive him at the railway station. I couldn’t stop my tears.” After the games, Ranjan was felicitated by many local clubs. Following his success, Ranjan has become the toast of the neighbourhood.

On the International Day for Disabled Persons, the department of women and child development and social welfare, government of West Bengal, honoured Ranjan for being a role model and his remarkable performance in several fields.
