Subject experts attribute the fear factor to various reasons including peer pressure and the level of interest among others. “Students have always found Chemistry to be a boring subject. Of all the topics that are covered as part of the subject, they despise Organic Chemistry the most,” says Sunil Kumar, counsellor of Chemistry with the education helpline and a teacher in a government school.
Meanwhile, a part of the blame is put on the parents as well. “From the very beginning, parents instill a fear for the subject in the child. Moreover, Mathematics is all about practice and with so much pressure, children are unable to devote time to it. Parents harping on the point that it is the most scoring subject also make students wary of it and they start fearing Maths,” feels Anju Narula, counsellor of the subject.
“Peer pressure is another significant factor. At coaching classes, students preparing for IIT entrance examinations talk about themes that sound Greek to a child who has not read anything about it. This, in a way, demotivates a child who is not aspiring for the IITs,” Narula adds. Experts suggest creating interest in the subject as the key to score marks in the subjects. “Students should try to develop a liking for the subject. Instead of dreading it, they should befriend it,” says Kumar.
