Surat Bhagwan Jha, the Surat-based brother-in-law of Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, filed an application in a Mumbai court on Friday seeking permission to deliver home-cooked food to her in prison. The move came after Pragya, who was arrested in connection with the Malegaon blast, and is lodged in the Byculla Women’s Jail in Mumbai at present, stopped eating jail food. The sadhvi alleged that the food supplied to her was infested with worms and egg particles.

According to Pragya’s family, she has stopped taking food and water in the jail premises, alleging that it is unclean and that egg particles had been found in the curry and bread. Pragya’s sister, Pratibha, went to meet her sister on March 1 with her husband, Bhagwan. Soon after, the couple contacted Pragya’s lawyer and filed an application before the judicial magistrate on Friday, seeking permission to deliver her food prepared by her relatives in Mumbai.

Pragya’s father, Chandrapal Singh Thakur, said: “She is a sadhvi and cannot take anything that has egg. She is a complete vegetarian. When she complained, the jail authorities took it lightly. Since childhood, my daughter is allergic to impure water and food. She never eats snacks or any outside food. I am now worried about her, as she has become weak. She was once admitted to the jail hospital after she fell sick due to the food.”

Pratibha said: “Pragya has a strong willpower; and once she decides not to eat, she will not eat. She told us she will eat only if the food is clean and homemade. We have arranged for that, as many of our relatives stay in Mumbai. We are only awaiting the court’s permission.”
