Lucknow, February 27 Praveen Kumar’s story shows how determination can overcome handicaps. Not even his parents had imagined that Praveen’s `small savings’ would bring them name and fame in the years to come. The 21 year-old Meerut player who, by clinching four crucial wickets in the India’s one-dayer vs Sri Lanka at Hobart, was instrumental in fetching India the victory and earned the man-of-the-match title.

His father, Shakat Singh who is a constable in Singhalvi Aheer Police Station of Baghpat, in a chat with The Indian Express over phone, gave some very interesting information about Praveen. “ Like other parents, I also used to give him Rs 2 or Rs 4 daily so that he could buy something during recess at school. However, this boy used to save all this money and buy old balls and other second-hand cricketing stuff from the market and used to practice cricket whenever he got time. At times, I asked him to pay greater attention to his studies and try for some government job after graduation, but the moment he got selected in the UP under-19 team, I let him continue with his passion. Presently he is BA 1st year student at Meerut College, Meerut.”

Shakat Singh said he felt proud that his son was doing so well due to his hard work and talent. “He has nurtured his talent using old cricketing stuff. The guidance of his coach Vipin Vats has gone a long way in grooming his talent.”

Another interesting fact that Shakat Singh told was that his brother Jagat Singh (Praveen’s uncle) is a wrestler and wanted Praveen also to become a wrestler but Praveen always showed great dedication to cricket.

His elder brother Vinay Kumar is also very happy with Praveen’s good show in Australia. “ Praveen phoned me in the morning and said that he gave his level best in the match against Lanka. We told him to continue with the good work and our good wishes are with him.”

Praveen ‘s mother Murti Devi is very happy at her son’s achievement. “It is all due to God’s grace that Praveen performed so well. Our prayers have been answered. When he phoned me yesterday, he enquired if I had watched the match on TV and was very happy when I replied in the affirmative.”

There is a festive atmosphere at his residence in Multan Nagar locality of Meerut. Sweets are being distributed and his family has been getting phone calls from well-wishers.
