For getaway-longing Mumbaikars, Aksa beach, situated in a village by the same name in Malad, has always held a strong pull, despite the notoriety of recurring drowning incidents at the beach. The seascape is beautiful, and makes weekend revelers flock here. But it is unsafe to swim as the currents are strong and the sands of the beach keep shifting. Due to the waves, people, like the seven drowned persons last week, often fail to figure out whether they are standing or stepping on firm ground. The condition of the beach worsens during the rainy season.

Still, the beach, on the way to Madh island, easily accessible by bus and auto rickshaws, remains popular with picnickers, even though the flow of visitors has reduced over the years. Cashing on it are a string of resorts and hotels.

This beach has INS Hamla (the naval base of India Navy) at one end. There is a small beach called Dana Paani close by. And those seeking more fun can always take the ferry at the nearby jetty to reach Manori, which is another beach frequented during the weekends.

There had been suggestion to restrict public access to the area. But the fact that people flock to the beach in spite of warnings and death figures is an indication of fun-seekers’ love for this place. Posting more lifeguards near the seafront and more boards with warning, as demanded, can be a solution as it will make them tread with care.
