Delivering the keynote address at the 87th Conference of the heads of Anglo Indian Schools in India at La Martiniere for Boys in the city on Monday, Gandhi said: “Today there is a sense of urgency and desperation in curriculum to hit the jackpot of 99 percent. I am worried about the short termism of everything, including teaching.” He said that this short term attitude is turning student into “successful failures.”
Gandhi said that success and job are short term achievement while fulfillment is long term one. The Governor also added that communicating with the students is an uphill task and the teachers can introduce conversation in art of pedagogy & dialogue in science of communication, for more effective teaching and reaching out to students.
Addressing a gathering where 140 principals of Anglo Indian Schools, across the country had gathered, he stressed on teaching Geography in a scientific manner so that it can help children to understand problem related to global warming. He urged the teachers not to shy away from teaching topics like “Will Sunderbans exist 10 years from now” and others.
Talking to the media persons on the sidelines of the programme, Neil O’ Brien, chairman of Council of Indian School Examination, said that the board is taking all the steps to make the environment studies part of curriculum. “We are the only board that have made environment education as a compulsory subject,” he said.
