The price of onions increased to Rs 27 against Wednesday’s Rs 23 to 25 per kilogram. Peas went from Rs 10-12 per kg to Rs 25 today. Tomatoes, which had touched a record low of Rs 10 per kg a month ago, are now being sold for Rs 22 per kg. Ginger, selling for Rs 50 per kg on Wednesday, went up to Rs 65 while the price of garlic rose by Rs 10.

Two days ago, grapes sold at Rs 60 per kg while now the rate is Rs 110 per kg. The price of pomegranate touched Rs 100 per kg today. Kinnow, available at Rs 40 per dozen on Wednesday, was sold at Rs 80 to 100 per dozen. “The strike is sure to make our monthly budget go haywire. Prices are increasing day by day, burning a hole in our pockets,” said Nitin Batra, a resident of Sector 22.

The strike has also forced farmers, who earlier sold their vegetables at Sector 26, to sell their produce at ‘Apni Mandi’. Used to selling in bulk, the farmers lamented that they have to retail vegetables in smaller quantities.

Truckers’ strike delays study material; students left high and dry

It is not only the traders who are feeling the heat of the truckers’ strike, even students find themselves on the receiving end of the nationwide strike.

Thirty students pursuing their postgraduate diploma in International Business Administration at University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS) in Panjab University have been left high and dry after their study material, which was to come from Delhi, was stuck en route thanks

to the strike.

Taking note of the situation, the university authorities have called upon the publishers to recover the stock and send it by taxi to Chandigarh.

Also, the last date for submission of projects has been extended to January 22. UIAMS Director A K Shaijhpal said, “We are trying our best to arrange for the notes. We are hopeful that students will get the material by Tuesday. Out of six subjects, students have already got the notes for four.”
