Surat, February 8 The activists of Uttar Bhartiya Maha Sangh (UBMH) hit the roads here on Friday to protest against the attacks on the non-Marathi people in Mumbai and the ‘failure’ of the Maharashtra government to stop these attacks by the members of the Maharashtra Navnirma Sena (MNS).

However, the Salabatpura police rushed to the spot near Jash Textile Market on the Ring Road and dispersed the mob when they tried to burn an effigy of MNS chief Raj Thackeray. Six persons-- Shailesh Tripathy, Girjashanker Mishra, Nagendra Shukla, Babadin Yadav, Dev Prakash Pandey and Chhotelal Sharma — were arrested for violating the notification by the Surat Police Commissioner.

The UBMH members had convened a secret meeting at their office in market area on Thursday evening and decided to launch the protest. As per the plan, they gathered on the Ring Road under the leadership of Tripathi and chanted slogans against the Maharashtra government. But before they could burn an effigy of Thackeray, the police came and dispersed them.

UBMH convenor Tripathi said, “We will not tolerate such type of physical torture by Raj Thackeray and his party workers on north Indians in Mumbai. They are acting like Britishers by opting for the same modus operandi of divide and rule. India is a secular and democratic country and such an act should not be tolerated.

“We are also angry on Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and their Home Minister R R Patil, who have failed to controll the prevailing scenario. The government has not yet arrested Raj Thackeray, who is one of the accused involved in the attacks on north Indians.”

UBMH leader Chhotelal Sharma said, “Mumbai is known as the financial capital of India and north Indians have also poured blood in the development of Mumbai. We have made a plan to send bangles to the Chief Minister and the Home Minister of Maharashtra.”

Demanding that Raj Thakrey should be arrested under MOCOCA, as he and his party workers have taken law in their hands, he said that UBMH would come up with “some surprising programmes” to register their protest in the coming days.
