The lawyers of Thane courts had decided to stay off work to protest the decision to set up new courts at Bhiwandi which presently has only five magistrate courts. According to the lawyers, the setting up of new courts in Bhiwandi would adversely affect the practice of the lawyers as the number of briefs would reduce.
According to the bar association president advocate Gajanan Chavan, the lawyers decided to take a break from protest as a meeting with the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court has been scheduled on Tuesday evening. Chavan also said that depending on the outcome of the meeting with the chief justice on Tuesday, the lawyers would decide whether to continue with the protest on January 7. He said that Registrar General of the Bombay High Court Mrudula Bhatkar had visited the office bearers of the bar association on Monday evening to ask them to stop the protest. There are about 1800 advocates who are registered with the bar association. They practise at Thane court which is district court and it has the courts of magistrates, sessions and civil senior division.
On the other hand, Bhiwandi which is around 17 km away from Thane may be getting four sessions court and four civil courts. The new courts at Bhiwandi are expected to commence from February 2009. Presently, there are about 300 advocates at the Bhiwandi which has five magistrate courts. The new courts will have geographical jurisdiction over urban area spanning the civic limits of Bhiwandi and rural area of Bhiwandi Taluka, Wada, Jawhar, Ganeshpuri and Vajreshwari. “The demand for sessions and civil court senior division is 20-years-old and there is need for the new courts. It is a marathon journey for those living in the far flung areas to attend court proceedings at Thane. The new courts will alleviate the inconvenience to the people in general,” said advocate Narayan Iyer who practises at Bhiwandi court.
