On the outside, they look like five average teenagers who are attending classes and juggling university exams. But Aryan, Varun Dayal, Rohit Sharma, Rishab Mahajan and Samarth Trehan have made Delhi proud as their metal band has just won an award at the finals of the prestigious Channel V Launchpad IndiaFest in Goa. Scythus — one of two shortlisted Delhi bands — has secured second place in the all-India competition, competing with bands from Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai.

The band’s rhythm guitarist, 18-year-old Dayal, who studies Economics at Delhi University, said, “This is by far our biggest achievement; it’s such a huge platform to win an award. Coming second is even bigger.”

Formed in 2010, and with influences ranging from a variety of genres, the band has a unique, heavy metal sound. “We have three idols: Lamb of God, Children of Bodom and Meshuggah. But since we all have differing influences, we try to incorporate all of them into our music,” added Dayal.

Scythus literally means “the weapon of God”, and the band decided on this name because “it just sounded really good”. Scythus won their first gig at the popular NSIT Festival and have performed at several gigs after that. In future, they are planning to record a mini-album, for which the compositions are already done.
