Army officer M K Tewari along with his wife Pankaj and two-year-old daughter were travelling from Zirakpur in the Patiala-depot bus of PRTC (PB-11-E-9599) and wished to alight at Chhatbir, a few kilometers away.
The driver and conductor of the bus refused to oblige, leading to a heated argument.
On reaching Banur amid a heated argument, the driver-conductor duo were joined by another driver and conductor of a Sangrur-depot bus of PRTC (PB-13-T-5365) and allegedly roughed up Tewari and his family.
Eyewitnesses said the duo also pushed Tewari’s two-year-old daughter out of the bus, but she escaped unhurt.
Tewari’s wife was also allegedly roughed up by the duo.
When the public got to know of the scuffle and the alleged misbehaviour of the two drivers and conductors, they took law into their own hands and beat up the foursome with lathis.
The unidentified people later fled from the scene.
The Banur police reached the spot and took the drivers and conductors into their custody along with the two buses. No case was, however, registered and a compromise was arrived at as the family did not wish to further the complaint. The accused also apologised for their misbehaviour.
Pepsu Road Transport Corporation managing director Manvesh Singh Sidhu, when contacted, said he would enquire into the matter and stern action would be initiated against the guilty.
He added that in case the accused staff was outsourcing their services, they would be dispensed with and in case they are employees, they would be suspended. The additional managing director has been asked to probe the incident.

Driver and Conducter should be prosecuted for doing such a inhuman thing to a 2Yr old......As Mr.tiwari was travelling with family...he could have been given some leverage and dropped at the place he needs to getdown. These PRTC drivers are stupid and GAWARS..I would prefer a Haryana roadways bus for PRTC or PUNJAB Roadways anytime. Conducters eat ZARDA and are occasionlly under influense of alcohol. MD of PRTC shud take stern action against culprits and kick them out of such a reputed bus company....Patiala is a princely city, don't ruin its image with such a show..... And being son of a ARMY officer, I would like to add that ARMY OFFICERS should be treated with respect specially when traveling with family..........

I found the beating act quite justified. Not always govt. people are at fault, as in this case the family can be blamed. The PRTC buses are already scarce in number on that route and they have to meet deadlines, secondly only a stupid person can prefer a long route bus for a few kilometers of distance specifically when there is enough auto service, cab service and local bus service. I have seen people from rajpura don't step on bus specially going to Rajpura rather they ride on buses going to Bathinda or Patiala. in such circumstances, many a times, people travelling to Patiala and Bathinda can't approach the buses despite satisfactory availability, as some brainless people occupy space they deserve. I think strictness on part of drivers and conductors in choosing passengers is the worthy solution for such unruly public. Yes but beating should definitely be avoided rather in place charge full ticket to end destination if someone rides long route bus for short distance.
