The students criticised the attitude of ministers Anandiben Patel (Patan MLA) and Education minister Ramanlal Vora when they came to present a memorandum to Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.
The parents and students were particularly angry over the failure on the part of the ministers to come to their aid during such times of distress. Neither Modi, nor his ministers Anandiben and Vora, gave a hearing to the girls, preferring to stay away from the Secretariat despite advance information that a delegation would meet them. Junior Minister Dr Mayaben Kodnani received them, assuring them of all possible help and protection.
In their written complaint to CM's Secretary Pankaj Kumar, the petitioners said that nothing short of a public punishment for the guilty and immediate scrapping of the internal marks system would suffice.
The delegation also expressed serious doubt over the capability of the government to punish the culprits. "There is a complicity of officials from the top to the bottom in this case. The girls were pressurised even by the Principal to not to speak to their parents. They have been courageous enough to bring the dirt out, and now instead of protecting the girls, the government is protecting the culprits. We just want them (the guilty) to be handed over to us for justice," said Ghemar Chaudhary, President of the Parents Association.
The parents alleged that professor Manish Parmar, the main accused, would use Vora's name to threaten the girls into submission, while, Atul Patel, the kingpin of this racket would flaunt his contacts with minister Anandiben.
"This is the same Anandiben, who during the just concluded elections, would come on a Scooty to seek votes. Now, she is not even willing to alight a single step from the high pedestal. We do not think this government is capable to mete out justice," said Hiral Chaudhary, a first year student of the college who was part of the delegation.
Earlier, speaking to the media at the Secretariat, the girls gave more details highlighting the complicity of the higher-ups in the gory episode. An agitated Govindbhai Patel, father of the one of the students, demanded that the teachers be handed over to a people's court for proper justice.
