Chandigarh For students of humanities, studying only books have become passé as the departments at Panjab University (PU) are making all possible moves to train them in a practical manner as well. Now, the students are involved in various tasks that will give them a better understanding of the subject.

Chairperson of Department of Geography at PU, Prof Krishan Mohan, said: “For example, students who pursue a Masters in Disaster Management get a chance to intern with some organisation in their third semester. Likewise, we will also send our students to local companies that deal with remote-sensing technology, geographic informatics systems and the likes so that the students gain work experience.”

Once considered a subject of ‘pure arts’, practical training is being incorporated in English as well. Chairperson of the English department at PU, Prof Anil Raina, said: “We give in-house practical training to students studying linguistics. Students learn the nuances of pronunciation in practical classes only. The idea to have students intern with different organisations is in the pipeline.”

Realising the significance of practical knowledge, teachers at the history department too are making keen efforts on these lines.

Chairperson of the department of history at PU, Dr Veena Sachdeva, said, “While there is not much to offer to master’s students other than visits to historical sites, the department has come up different ideas for research students. PhD students have been asked to study the architecture of ancient and historical buildings and also do research on erstwhile royal families.”
