Chandigarh Demanding the removal of speedbreakers from the university campus alleging wear and tear of vehicles, members of the Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) insisted on Wednesday that they be removed immediately.

Students’ Council president Sahil Nanda said they had submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor and Dean Students Welfare earlier but despite assurances, the speedbreakers had not been removed.

It was after the intervention of Professor Naval Kishore, Dean Students Welfare that the protest stopped and soon thereafter, men were put to remove the speedbreakers.

Professor Naval Kishore said a decision had already been taken to remove the speedbreakers and lay new ones. He added that they were waiting for the labourers to start work.

Students had earlier protested against the installation of speedbreakers as they caused wear and tear of vehicles.

Another demand was related to the cleaning of fountains at the Students’ Centre. This was, however, taken care of immediately. The Students’ Centre would have more dustbins as part of the cleanliness campaign and a number of benches have already been put towards this purpose.
