The members sought to design steps to beef up security on campus with some members suggesting that even faculty members not be allowed to enter the campus without showing their identity cards.
On the issue of Harpreet Singh Multani, under suspension since last eight months for stabbing a fellow student, the members stated that Multani’s court orders do not talk about a ban on entry to the campus. They, therefore, suggested that his suspension be cancelled and he be allowed to attend regular classes.
The Syndicate also rejected the demands of affiliated colleges to start with separate management courses. The logic behind the rejection was that affiliated colleges neither have adequate staff nor facilities to run the programme.
While scrapping the BSc (Biotechnology) course from the next academic session, the Syndicate also approved the 20 per cent increase in fees for the MSc Biotechnology course.
On the notification of the Punjab Government directing PU to send circulars to all its affiliated BEd colleges making a Class X pass certificate in Punjabi language mandatory for principals, the Syndicate decided to communicate the same to the respective colleges.
The communication states that the principals have a year to get the certificate by passing an examination failing which the post of principal will be advertised.
The Syndicate also rejected the proposal to transfer the BA I exams to affiliated colleges.
A committee had been formed to look into the matter, which besides stating resistance from the colleges argued that it would downgrade the quality of education.
