“We don’t want to put the health workers under any risk that is the reason why we have called off the drive for a day,” said an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s immunisation department.
On Sunday, as the news on violence broke out, 45 booths in Nemoni Baugh and 37 booths in Pestom Sagar attached to two health posts, were ordered to shut down by policemen after the situation worsened — a major set back to the immunization programme in that area.
Even though the city saw a hike in area coverage in this round of immunisation drive, BMC suffered a setback in Deonar and Govandi areas by 25 per cent on day one of the immunisation drive. The drive was successful in rest of the city with nine-lakh children below five years given polio drips.
