A week after the German bakery blast in Pune, another city youth succumbed to his injuries on Sunday. Rajeev Agarwal, 22, a law student of Symbiosis Law School in Pune, was declared dead at the Jehangir Hospital in Pune at 6 am today.
He did his Madhaymik from Seth Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya and Class XII from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. He was in the final year of his law course and was scheduled to graduate in April this year.
According to family members, Rajeev lost 80 per cent blood and received 60 per cent burns while his kidneys and liver were severely damaged in the blast. He was reportedly at the Bakery’s cash counter when the blast occurred. Rajeev father, Nand Kumar Agarwal, a city-based tax lawyer, and mother, Madhu Agarwal, left for Pune on February 14.
“His condition deteriorated and three days ago, his right leg was amputated because of multiple fractures,” said his cousin, Shyam Agarwal, at the Agarwal residence on 25, Banarasi Ghosh Street in North Kolkata. Shyam, a first year BCom student at St Xavier’s College, added that Rajeev was to celebrate his 23rd birthday on February 24.
“He tried to speak to me over the phone. But he was too feeble and had no energy to speak. Nearly 70 of his college friends donated blood for him, but he could not be saved,” added Shyam.
Rajeev’s elder brother, Ravi (23), works in Vadodra and his sister, Radhika (19), is a student of Shri Sikhsayatan College in Kolkata.
Rajeev’s death has taken the city’s toll to four. The earlier casualties include Shilpa Goenka, 22, and the brother-sister duo of Ankik Dhar (24) and Anindi Dhar (19).
