The university is in talks with the wine management branch of the University of Boredeaux regarding possibility of starting a wine institute. Nashik is a grape-producing region in the state. To tap the potential of Nashik, the wine institute may start at Nashik, where most of the institutes are affiliated to the University of Pune.
“We are in talks for starting joint programme, which will have research and studies covering activities in the process of making wine,” said Dr Pandit Vidyasagar, director of BCUD, University of Pune. “Boredeaux is one of the famous places in France for wine making. Therefore, this joint programme will be beneficial.”
During the recent visit of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, several French research institutes and universities held discussions with their Indian counterparts on joint research and student exchange programmes. “We have signed an umbrella agreement with the University of Boredeaux, which can be used as a framework for further cooperation,” said Dr Vasudha Garde, director of International Centre of University of Pune. “The joint programme on wine studies does not necessarily include wine making processes but it will be research oriented. The other areas of study may be marketing and management of wineries,” she said.
