Bathinda Having already cracked down on quacks endangering human lives, authorities in Punjab are now taking a hard line with fake veterinarians.

The Punjab State Veterinary Council (PSVC) has instructed all ADCs (D) and the Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) to register cases against “unauthorised quacks” under the Indian Veterinary Council Act. Officers have been asked to consult the Assistant District Attorneys concerned and approach civil courts, wherever necessary.

The PSVC is also considering holding training sessions for veterinary officials in order to highlight legal routes available against offending practitioners. PSVC president and AHD Director Dr BS Sidhu told Newsline: “Legal experts will train our officers about the sections under which veterinary quacks can be booked”, adding that certain officers have been short-listed already for the training. He held such quacks responsible for the mass death of cattle “over which much hue and cry is raised”.

“Villagers also need to be vigilant and not take their animals to such dubious impostors,” he added.

As per PSVC Registrar Dr H S Gill, there are about 10 to 15 veterinary quacks operating in each of the major districts in the state.
