Punjab dominates in police athletics

Lucknow Punjab Police was leading the medals tally on the penultimate day of the 57th All-India Police Athletics Championship with 9 golds, 12 silver and 9 bronze. CRPF with 8 golds, 8 silvers and 9 bronze and UP Police with 7 golds, 5 silvers and 3 bronze were at the second and third spots, respectively. The meet is being held at the athletic stadium of 35th Bn PAC, Lucknow.

West Bengal woman pole vaulter Babli Mitra was the star performer at the here on Friday. Babli equalled the five-year-old record of 3.20m set by CRPF's Deepa Choudhry who incidentally finished third with a below par 2.60m. With a distance of 3.15 Punjab’s Karamjit Kaur clinched the silver.

Although nowhere close to the best, Orrisa comfortably won gold in the 4x400m women’s relay leaving Punjab and CRPF to share the silver and bronze, respectively.

Saurav Singh brought cheers to the home team as he clinched gold in the men's triple jump event. He leaped a distance of 15.85m. He was followed by Punjab’s Sukhjinder Singh and CRPF's Shailendra Kumar.

The Results:

Triple jump (men): 1st Saurav Singh (UP), 2nd Sukhjinder Singh (Punjab), 3rd Shailendra Kumar (CRPF);

Pole vault (women): 1st Babli Mitra (West Bengal; 3.20m: EMR), 2nd Karamjit Kaur (Punjab), 3rd Deepa Choudhry (CRPF);

3000m steeplechase (men): 1st Raju Ram Jani (CRPF), 2nd Ram Bahadur Subba (BSF), 3rd Shiv Pujan Bind (UP);

Shot put (women): 1st Saroj Sihag (CRPF), 2nd Smritikana Mana (West Bengal), 3rd Seema Antil (CRPF);

4x400m relay (women): 1st Orissa, 2nd Punjab, 3rd CRPF;

400m hurdles (men): 1st Ranjodh Singh (Punjab), 2nd Kuldev Singh (Punjab), 3rd Bhagrath Yadav (BSF);

400m hurdles (women): 1st Sapinder Kaur (Punjab), 2nd Poornim K (CRPF); 3rd Tuli Deshmukh (West Bengal).

Sports meet

Uttara Mahila Mandal, NTPC Limited, Lucknow organised a sports competition for the children of Rajkiya Bal Kalyan Shishu Vidyalaya, Lucknow on Friday. The children participated in various games with great enthusiasm. Pramila Pandey, president Uttara Mahila Mandal and Priti Srivastava, secretary along with other members also graced the occasion.
