Patiala, March 4 The Centre has allowed yet another extension to Punjab for unbundling of its State Electricity Board. The Union Ministry of Power, in a communication to Punjab, has granted the state another four months up to June 30 to unbundle the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), as per provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003. This is the seventh such extension granted to the state government by the Centre.

The decision comes as a major relief to the state, which has been deliberating over the contentious issue for long now. With the staff and employees of the PSEB vehemently opposing the unbundling, the government has been dragging its feet on the issue and seeking extension from the Centre.

While the state had earlier been getting six-month extensions for initiating the unbundling process, the Centre has now been allowing extensions of only three months lately. The last two extensions granted to the state were of three months each.

Kerala and Tamil Nadu have also been allowed an extension by the Centre for unbundling their electricity boards up to June 30.

Certain states in the country have been opposing the unbundling process on the plea that it has not proved successful in many states that have carried it out. As per the Electricity Act, 2003, all SEBs were to be unbundled and privatised within a period of two years.
