Punjab, Haryana sail into semis

Ludhiana Hosts AG Haryana and AG Punjab got off to a flying start as they recorded facile victories in pool B matches on the opening day of the North Zone Football Tournament being organised by the Accountant General (Audit) Haryana at the Sector 17 Football Stadium on Monday. Seven teams are taking part in the tournament.

AG Haryana routed AG Uttranchal by 6-0 and AG Punjab mauled AG Jammu and Kashmir by 5-0. In a pool A match, AG Uttar Pradesh blanked AG Himachal Pradesh by 3-0.

In the inaugural match AG Haryana handed out a 6-0 drubbing to AG Uttranchal. The AG Haryana players demonstrated their combined efforts to outplay Uttranchal in all departments of the game. The highlight of the match was fine brace by Virender Kanwar and Rajesh Kumar.

It was Suraj who opened the account for AG Haryana with an early goal in the seventh minute. But they had to wait for 21 minutes to score their second goal through Sanjeev Deopa. Maintaining pressure, Virender Kanwar found the object in the 30th minute while Rajesh Kumar pumped in two goals within a span of five minutes. His first goal came in the 42nd minute and second in the 47th minute. Virender Kanwar completed the winners' tally in the 50th minute.

In another pool B match, AG Punjab blanked AG Jammu and Kashmir by 5-0. In a one-sided encounter, Rajeev Rattan emerged the star performer for AG Punjab as he contributed two goals. He put his team ahead in the 5th minute and got his second goal in the 18th minute. Sanjay (10th), Vinay Kanwar (17th) and Jaswinder (37th) contributed one goal in the kitty of AG Punjab.

In a Pool A outing, AG Uttar Pradesh defeated AG Himachal Pradesh by 3-0. Shabab Raja scored in the 15th and 20th minutes. Lal Mohan Prasad rounded of the winner's tally in the 40th minute.
