One woman died while five others were injured when a Punjab Roadways bus turned turtle near Cheema Chowk this morning. The deceased Brij Bala is the mother-in-law of former Indian Hockey team Captain Gagan Ajit Singh.
The bus headed for Chandigarh from Ferozepur somersaulted while negotiating a turn around 6.45 am.
Dr Brij Bala, who was on her way to Chandigarh to attend an orientation programme, died on the spot. Three of the others who received minor injuries were taken to the Civil Hospital where they were discharged after first aid while the other two namely Harpreet Singh and Vijay Kumar Jain are under treatment at the Christian Medical College and Hospital.
Forty-eight-year old Harpreet Singh, a resident of Dugri Phase-I whose right hand fingers were badly crushed in the accident, will be operated upon where doctors say they will have to amputate his fingers.
Vijay Kumar Jain, 75, a trader who resides in Rajguru Nagar suffered multiple fractures in his hand. He is admitted in the ICU.
“My husband dropped my father-in-law to the bus stand as he had to attend a meeting of the Indian Oil Company in Chandigarh. The moment my husband returned home, we received a call that he (Vijay) has been injured in an accident,” said Saroj Jain, daughter-in-law of Vijay.
On the demise of his mother-in-law, Gagan Ajit Singh said, “It is a big loss and a shock.” He had come to the Civil Hospital to claim the body.
