Patiala “Punjabi language faces the biggest danger from none other than the mothers who chose and prefer to communicate with their children in languages other than Punjabi, especially English. It then gets naturalised in their psyche and becomes an inbuilt mechanism. Our foremost duty, therefore, should be to change this attitude that we see in a majority of the families.”

This was stated by Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, while presiding over a seminar on ‘Role of mother tongue in the development of personality’ to mark World Mother Tongue Day, which is observed on February 21.

All our efforts, he said, like publishing books, dictionaries and encyclopaedias, holding debates and seminars will be of little use without steering a paradigm shift aimed at changing the attitude of mothers towards the language. He urged people to make use of the latest technology and integrate modernity with tradition for the advancement of Punjabi.

Punjabi scholar Mahip Singh said that language has always played a significant role in the advancement of a culture.
