Ahmedabad Members of a gang running a fake currency racket, which was busted recently, used to target rural areas to circulate counterfeit currency in order to minimise the risk of being detected.

This was revealed by officials of the Ahmedabad City Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) in its remand application of two more accused in the racket. The Metropolitan Court, on Thursday, remanded the two in police custody till February 7.

“To avoid the risk of being detected, they were using interior villages of Rajsthan to circulate fake notes of Rs 500 and Rs 100 denominations, which is a shift from the modus operandi of using urban areas for circulating the notes,” said Inspector K K Patel.

The duo was arrested from Jhalor district of Rajasthan on Wednesday. The two were identified as Mithalal Mali and Narpatsinh Chauhan, both are residents of Jhalor.

Earlier on Tuesday, the DCB had busted the racket and arrested two persons from the Kotarpur area of Ahmedabad with counterfeit notes to the face value of over Rs 3 lakh. The arrested persons were identified as Suresh Mali from Rajasthan and Dungar Rabari from Sabarkantha in Gujarat.

Based on their revelations during interrogation, the DCB arrested two more members of the racket, one from the Gita Mandir area in Ahmedabad and the other from Rajasthan.

Patel, who produced Mithalal and Narpatsinh before the court, said: “During the interrogation of Suresh and Dungar, it was revealed that Mithalal is the kingpin of the racket. So, we got Suresh call him on a mobile phone and meet him near Gita Mandir with counterfeit notes. When he came to Ahmedabad, we nabbed him with fake currency of Rs 500 and Rs 100 denominations.”

Patel said further that after his arrest, Mithalal named Narpatsinh as one of the gang members. Following that, a DCB team raided Narpatsinh’s residence in Rajasthan and recovered various instruments like printer, laptop, scanner and papers used for making fake notes.
