Kolkata, March 2 Tension mounted in Behala in South 24 Paraganas following the death of a six-year-old boy who was mowed down by a speeding truck on Sunday afternoon.

Angry locals ransacked vehicles that were parked in the area and also blocked the traffic for nearly two hours. Personnel of Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.

Rahul Das was on his way back home when the truck knocked down his bicycle near the Behala Flying Club. The driver had reportedly lost control of the vehicle.

According to the police, a large amount of construction materials of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) lying on the sides of the road had left little space for the truck driver to manoeuvre the vehicle. “It is a tragic incident. The road is congested and according to the locals the truck was speeding,” said ASP (South 24 Parganas) DP Singh, who visited the area and urged locals to remain calm. Heeding to the demand of the residents, Singh said a speed-breaker will be constructed to prevent vehicles from speeding.

The police will also discuss the issue with AAI officials as their construction materials are lying on the road.
